Whenever you are trying to put your baby to sleep-be it nap time, bedtime or even during late night feedings- avoid eye contact. Each time you make eye contact it will motivate your baby to be remain awake and then it will be difficult to make her sleep again. Making eye contact can also engage her attention and make her think it’s playtime. The more you interact at sleep time with your baby, the more she will be motivated to remain awake. Prompting her to stay awake would be the last thing you want to do when you want her to sleep. Don’t hold her gaze or baby talk to her while trying to put her to sleep, she will want to hear you and thus stare at you with focus. Instead just gaze at her belly and with a soothing touch and a soft voice make her go back to sleep again.
