Important Thing To Remember When Child Starts Feeding Himself
11m to 1y
Don’t leave your child alone to eat. Have meals together and watch how you eat using spoon. When your child eats on her own, she is more conscious of her eating and also about when she is full.
Around this time, your child will use her thumb and index fingers to feed herself. Initially, include foods that are small and soft like cooked vegetables. Once her pincer grasp is strengthened, introduce the spoon and she can try having thick foods like yoghurt, pudding(kheer), etc.
Foods like peanuts, popcorn can cause choking. Hence, avoid them.
Involve her in activities, which are going to refine her fine motor skills. For instance, arranging blocks, turning pages of book, doodling, etc. This will make her pincer grasp stronger.
Mastering feeding skills takes time for your cutie pie. Give her time to explore the food via touch, taste, sight and smell especially when you add new foods to the meal. Hence, be patient. Praise her efforts as she works on self- feeding.
