Be Your Child's Friend, Philosopher and Guide
As a parent, you are your child’s primary support system. For your growing kid, the world can at times be a new and intimidating place, and he needs to know that you are there to fall back on. This will give him a much-needed sense of security.
However, as your kid grows older, it is time to gradually make him self-dependent. Instead of hovering over him for every little thing, allow him to sometimes do things by himself. For example, let him get his own school bag ready for the next day. Let him take responsibility of fetching the newspaper from the front door every day.
Your child needs to know that you have faith in him. Trust his decisions and fan his passions. Give him some time to learn and unlearn. This would be his first step towards self-discipline.
