Holding and gripping the pencil in the right way is the first and foremost step towards writing, and your child needs to learn this beginning from now. Here, it is important to understand that it is easier said than done. For your child, to hold the pencil in the right way will take some time. Because it involves several muscles that work together to make it happen.

Allow your child to hold first, forgetting about the right or wrong. The first stage here is to get a hold and a grip on the object. His little fingers may not have enough strength and dexterity to hold the pencil in the right way and for longer duration. So, it will take time. Once he is able to do that, hold the pencil for him, in what is the best way to hold a pencil. Here you need to also understand the fact that kids have their own ways of it. Your child might not hold the pencil like the way you want him to. That’s because he has different muscle memory that is propelling him to hold the pencil in a certain way.

So, look for what makes it comfortable for him. Also, it is important to understand and look if there is anything that is hurting his little fingers. If so, do help him address that problem too.
