A flu is a contagious disease. It can spread from one person to another. If an infected person, sneezes, coughs or even speaks to you, you can get infected. The flu virus easily travels through the air, hence it can spread from one person to another. You may also catch flu by touching the things that are usually touched by everyone such as phones, door knobs, chairs etc. that might have flu virus on them.

Symptoms of Flu: You may notice the following symptoms if you have flu during pregnancy: •Sore throat that may get worse by the second or third day after catching the infection •Fever ranging from 102 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit •Muscles may feel sore •Headache •Feeling tired and generally weak •Shivering •Coughing •Sneezing •No appetite •Vomiting •Not feeling proper movement of baby. Symptoms of flu last usually for a week or more.

Risk of flu for the mother and the baby A flu can make the mother very weak as there is no immunity. It may also lead to pneumonia or infection in the lung. Flu can affect the unborn baby too. There may be issues in development or in certain cases, it can lead to miscarriage.

Treatment for Flu Consult your doctor immediately if you feel you have flu. Your doctor may prescribe certain medicines like paracetamol which are safe to be consumed.

Tips to avoid the flu: • Avoid visits to public places and limit contact with people •Drink lots of water •Include vitamin C in diet •Wash your hands frequently •Eat well and rest •Take flu vaccine
