At week 6, your doctor will give you a list of nutritional supplement that your body requires during your pregnancy cycle. You need an extra dose of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats along with various minerals and vitamins. These vitamins and minerals are required for the healthy growth and development of the baby. Folate is the most important supplement that the doctor starts when you think of starting up a family. This helps in preventing spina bifida and other neural birth defects in your baby.
Prenatal vitamins as suggested by your doctor should be taken on regular basis and these should be taken before conception, during pregnancy, and your lactation period. These supplements help in preventing the risk of preterm birth and preeclampsia that occurs due to high blood pressure in pregnant women. Iron supplement is required the most during pregnancy as it is very vital for the mother and the unborn baby. Iron provides oxygen to the baby that leads to its healthy growth and development. If iron is low in pregnant mothers, it leads to anemia and it increases the risk of premature labor, depression and infant anemia as well. Pregnant women should take iron supplement as advised by her doctor on daily basis and the recommended intake is 27 mg per day.
Vitamin D is another important supplement that will give you and the baby healthy bones and a strong immune system. Even magnesium plays an important role during pregnancy as it helps in muscle growth and nerve function. Deficiency of magnesium might lead to premature labor and chronic hypertension in mothers. It also reduces the risk of complications like preterm birth. Apart from this, your doctor will suggest you fish oil for fetal brain development and probiotics for keeping your gut area healthy.
