Prenatal visits: Get a Glucose screening test anytime between now to 28 weeks

The glucose screening test is a routine test done during pregnancy, which allows one to check the glucose level of a pregnant woman. If by any chance one is suffering from gestational pregnancy, then it is detected during this test.

If not done already, this is the time at 28 weeks that your doctor would get this test done on you.

What you need to know about this test

In the process of two-step testing, the glucose screening test is performed. In this step, you are not required to change the diet in any way and you will be asked to drink the liquid that contains glucose. After an hour of consumption of that liquid, blood will be drawn to check your glucose level. If your blood glucose from the first step is too high, you will need to come back for a 3-hour glucose tolerance test. The process followed for this test is relatively different, here you do are not allowed to consume anything other than sips of water for 8-14 hours before your test. In fact, you cannot even eat anything during the test. Thereafter, you will be asked to drink a liquid that contains glucose of approximately 100 grams. Then the blood will be drawn before you drink the liquid, and then again 3 more times after every 60 minutes after you drink it. Each time, your blood glucose level will be checked. One needs to allow at least 3 hours for this test.

In one-step testing, one needs to go to the diagnostic centre one time for a 2-hour glucose tolerance test. In this test, you are not allowed to eat or drink anything (other than sips of water) for 8 to 14 hours before your test. In fact, you cannot even eat anything during the test. Thereafter you will be asked to drink a liquid that contains glucose of approximately 75 grams. You will have blood drawn before you drink the liquid, and again 2 more times every 60 minutes after you drink it. Each time, your blood glucose level will be checked. One needs to allow at least 2 hours for this test.
